Brief History of Knock on Wood:
The expression “touch wood” or “knock on wood” is from the early 1800.
Young children playing tag or as the game was called “tiggy-touch-wood” would “touch wood”.
They would run to a tree and tap it so they would be safe from being tagged.
It is believed that the phrase was passed on into everyday language and has been used as a superstitious action to ward off bad luck and bring in protection and good luck.
Several countries have adopted their own version and meaning.
KOW Variations:
Today people will often “knock on wood” for the same superstitious reasons by accessing the closest wood item around. This could be a doorway, the underside of a table top, a wood décor item sitting close by or even a simple everyday wood keychain found in a pocket or purse.
